Coby, Texas Student Nominated By Rissa, Teacher
Tell us a little about yourself!
My name is Rissa and I am a teacher and a paleontologist. I've been sewing masks for my community, but I've been supporting 3 of my students (led by 12th grader Coby who is pictured and two 8th graders Benji and Grant) on an even more awesome project during the pandemic.
Tell us about your #MakeWaves project.
My students (12th grader and two 8th graders) have been using their own 3D printers and a Silhouette craft cutter to produce face shields for front line workers, they have donated over 200 of them to anesthesiologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, to Dallas Anesthesiology Associates, Pinnacle Anesthesiology, as well as to the Southlake Fire Department EMTs and to Baby Booties Diaper Bank for their volunteers to use at their weekly diaper and food distributions.
This project was conceived by my 12th grade student and he asked his Odyssey of the Mind teammates to join him and asked me to support them by running the 3D printer at the school. I've been doing porch pick up of materials and finished products and taken care of distribution. I've also mostly been self funding the project after we used the materials at the school, their parents have also contributed to the supplies cost.
They have decided to continue the project for as long as there is a need and we can source the materials. Please view this small article published on the project.
Who / What inspired you?
We are hoping to keep as many people safe and protected with PPE as possible. Coby (the senior) wanted to make sure his mother, an anesthesiologist, had proper protection. He quickly realized it wasn't just her who was lacking proper PPE and from there I have been honored to work with these amazing students, for weeks, on this project.
Coby whose mother, Dr. Stacey Warner, is an anesthesiologist and he wanted to make sure she and those working with her had proper PPE. I personally am inspired by the commitment of my students to help the community and look beyond themselves during this time.
This project is run by Coby Warner, a senior, at The Clariden School of Southlake, and two 8th grade students, Benji W. and Grant S. I work along side these three amazing students to support their project as their teacher and their coach in Odyssey of the Mind.
These students sacrifice their free time to run this project after they complete their online schooling each day.
